Helping learners find their wings

Why Hibou?

Cathy Elcik has been a test prep tutor in the Boston area since 2005. In 2014 she founded Hibou* to specialize in academic and creative writing coaching and one-on-one tutoring for the SSAT®, SAT®, and ACT®.

With her signature compassion and humor, Cathy individualizes her test prep tutoring to suit the educational goals of her students. She helps struggling students develop strategies based on their unique educational needs, bolsters the confidence of anxious students, and challenges high-achieving students to reach beyond their comfort zones.

After discussing a student’s educational needs, Cathy assigns a diagnostic and schedules one-on-one sessions in your home or online. Weekly sessions work toward program goals by strengthening weaknesses revealed during the diagnostic and those that crop up during lessons. Because tutoring is all done one-on-one, Cathy’s sessions feel like a classroom designed for a single student: yours.

Cathy Elcik holds a BA in print journalism from Northeastern University and an MA in English from Boston University where she studied creative writing as a teaching fellow. With adult creative and professional writers, Cathy tailors coaching programs to meet a particular project's needs. She helps writers at all stages of the creative process, from professionals who want to improve their written communication to novelists who want a full manuscript consult. Cathy is also happy to help writers struggling to carve out a writing practice in a busy professional life.

*Why the name? Hibou (pronounced ee-boo) is the French word for owl, a symbol of wisdom and strength.
